Consistent blood flow to all parts of the scalp declines as you age

Decreased blood flow is a factor in hair loss.
Decreased blood flow is a
factor in hair loss.

Blood transports nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your body, including your hair follicles.  Like grass stops growing and dies from lack of nutrition or water, your hair follicles stop producing thick, healthy hair if not adequately “fed”.

This has been confirmed in several research studies.  For example, Dr. Boris E. Goldman and colleagues at Butterworth Hospital in Michigan tested the blood flow in the scalps of balding and non-balding males.  The results were clear – scalp blood flow was “significantly lower” in the bald subjects compared to the non-bald control group.  In fact, on average blood flow was about 40% lower in the balding males.

Plus, on the balding males there was significant variation in different parts of the scalp -  blood flow was significantly greater where they had hair, compared to their bald spots.

In another study conducted at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, researchers found that males in the early stages of male pattern baldness had subcutaneous blood flow that was 2.6 times less than non-balding subjects.

These studies are conclusive evidence that reduced blood flow is a factor in hair loss.
