What is male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness is a form of androgenetic alopecia.  It accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. Typically, as the name implies, male pattern baldness follows a usual “pattern” of receding from front to back at the temples.  Usually the Hamilton-Norwood scale is used to quantify the severity of male pattern baldness.

What Causes Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness occurs when excessive amounts of the enzyme 5 alpha reductase converts testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone).  Excessive DHT can cause hair shafts to narrow, producing progressively finer hairs with each new growth cycle until eventually male pattern baldness begins.
